Many motorists are not aware of the existence of separate tyres for summer and winter road conditions, perhaps due to the every-changing British climate that can offer the full spectrum of seasons in a single day. In many European countries, however, it is a legal requirement to ensure that your car is fitted with appropriate winter tyres during the colder months.
Winter weather brings increased challenges to the motorist. Wet and icy conditions significantly increase braking distances, and tyres with inappropriate tread for the road conditions can compromise your safety and that of your passengers. Until recently, drivers have had to choose to fit either winter tyres or all-season tyres to achieve the required levels of grip on icy or wet roads; however, the Michelin X Climate car tyre now offers an alternative option.
Designed as a summer tyre, the Michelin X Climate is the first of its kind to offer winter certification. Most countries demand a winter tyre tread depth of at least 3mm, although some countries now insist on a minimum of 4mm. This makes the tyre better at gripping the road, even when conditions are unfavourable, such as in snow, rain and icy weather. Winter tyres need to demonstrate superior grip, along with shorter braking distances in both wet and dry conditions.
