The new Performance-Eco tyre.
The ContiEcoContact 5 is the first true high performance tyre in the rolling resistance optimized segment, that combines high braking security, minimum rolling resistance and a high mileage. Combining short braking distances on wet and dry roads with low rolling resistance has in the past always been considered extremely problematic. Europe's leading tyre manufacturer Continental has now launched a product which resolves this problem with apparent ease - the new ContiEcoContact 5. The tyre engineers did, however, have to tread new ground in terms of all the tyre elements involved - casing, compound, tyre contour and tread pattern design - in order to achieve the high level of progress.
The main target conflicts when reducing rolling resistance relate to the safety-relevant characteristics of a tyre. This means that the conflict between rolling resistance and handling can be influenced via the design, whilst the tyre compound can assist in the problem area of low rolling resistance and short braking distances in the wet, changing the tyre contour allows mileage performance to be enhanced, and the tread pattern can have a positive effect on braking characteristics in the wet. The sum total of the potential improvements helps the new tyre to achieve a considerably better overall performance with even more balanced driving characteristics. The engineers at Continental therefore focused on all these areas in order to meet the high requirements made on the new tyre for compact cars and large saloons.
Generally speaking, tyres are always a compromise between high levels of grip or low rolling resistance for good fuel economy. But with the Continental EcoContact 5, you really do get the best of both worlds. This is a tyre that offers good grip and short braking distances for safety, but also offers low rolling resistance for economy.
How is this possible? Continental’s engineers have taken a radical approach to the design, contour, tread pattern and compound of the tyre, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions and of course lower fuel consumption. But the Continental EcoContact 5 still delivers excellent braking performance and strong grip on wet roads. This is achieved with a combination of additives and polymer chains that are linked to the silica. The tread design contributes too, with optimised lug edges to offer wet grip as well as thin sipes to reduce tread deformation and therefore contribute to lower energy loss. There’s also a lighter sidewall which makes for a more supple tyre that also contributes to the Continental EcoContact 5’s improved rolling resistance.
Continental has worked with some of Europe’s leading car makers to offer in the EcoContact 5 a tyre that is suited to long-distance drivers who care about fuel consumption and the environment. Many manufacturers including BMW, Peugeot and Audi fit these tyres as standard from the factory.
