As a biker, your tyres are always important as those two small contact patches are the only things that keep you in touch with the road surface. The Avon Trailrider tyre is aimed squarely at the adventure bike market, so it needs to offer a good balance of on-road capability and grip with the ability to cope with the odd bit of off-roading too. Adventure bikes tend to be heavy and powerful machines so whatever tyre you choose needs to be able to handle this safely in all road conditions. The Avon Trailrider range uses a super-rich silica compound in order to enhance wet grip. The tyres also have a clever tread design that is made to aid water dispersal but also to ensure that the temperature of the tyre is consistent when warm. This is achieved with specially-designed sipes which limit the flexing of the tread to improve grip and stability. This design also means the tyres are quick to warm up.
The tread pattern looks smart too, with deep grooves that suit the looks of chunky adventure bikes well. Of course, this has a practical application too, effectively clearing water and providing high levels of wet grip. All this is combined with high-tech construction for the carcass and multi-compound treads, which adds up to superb grip and handling. Designed for 90 per cent on-road use, the Avon Trailrider offers enough capability to keep those who occasionally venture of the beaten track happy. The Trailrider uses Advanced Variable Belt Density (AVBD) technology to ensure that the tyre is strong when upright and maintains its shape to ensure less wear in the centre. However, when you lean into corners it also means there’s a larger contact patch on a softer compound to minimise the risk of sliding.
The Trailrider is available in various sizes and in radial and cross-ply versions. Avon is one of the oldest tyre brands, dating back to 1904 and provides tyres not just for bikes but for cars and vans too, and for the race track as well as for road use.
