As the successor to the widely acclaimed RainSport 2, the Uniroyal Rainsport 3 is the obvious choice for excellent grip in wet conditions. They are rated highly for resistance to aquaplaning, handling and grip.
Aquaplaning, grip and handling
The Rainsport 3 tyres feature Shark Skin Technology which, as the name suggests, mimics the way in which a shark’s skin dispels water from its surface. The structure of the tread has been designed to optimise the flow of water away from the surface of the tyre so that more rubber is in contact with the road. Water turbulence is minimised and you get the highest levels of protection from aquaplaning.
For maximum grip, tyres need to have a large surface area through which forces are transmitted to the road. On the Rainsport 3 tyres, this is achieved through fast curve configuration and flexible tread blocks. This allows you to corner at speed but to still have sufficient grip to stay safely on the road.
In terms of handling, the tread pattern allows more of the tyre to be in contact with the road so the steering is totally under your control. Users often comment as to how impressed they are with the tyres and how well they cope with quite deep standing water on roads. Summertime motorway driving is a particular strength because the tread of the tyre disperses the water and gives superior grip.
When you are researching the main tyre brands such as Pirelli, Falken, Sumitomo or Bridgestone they will be supplied with an EU label describing their performance in terms of wet grip, fuel efficiency and noise emissions. The main benefit of the Uniroyal Rainsport series is the wet grip standard that they reach. The majority of Uniroyal Rainsports are graded A on the EU tyre label so they have a shorter braking distance on wet roads. This keeps you safe when you are driving in adverse weather conditions.
It is also informative to check out the fuel consumption grading. Tyres can alter the fuel efficiency of your vehicle by as much as 20% and everyone wants more miles per tank of fuel. The higher the fuel efficiency rating, the lower your carbon dioxide emissions will be because the tyres have less rolling resistance. Tyres with a lower rolling resistance waste less energy and are therefore more efficient.
Rolling noise is another important consideration. Noise is measured in decibels. The more bars on the label, the louder the tyres.
