GT, or Giti Radial, is often typecast as a Chinese manufacturer; in fact, it is Indonesian, with a history in tyre manufacture that goes back to 1951. The company prides itself on its quality control.
The GT Radial Sport Active car tyre is universally acknowledged as a very good tyre. It is a summer tyre designed for premium and ultra-high-performance passenger cars, including three-door coupés, four-door saloons and some sporty estate cars, whether front-wheel or rear-wheel drive. Included in this market are cars such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3- and 4-Series, and hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus ST, Audi TT and Golf GTI.
Most of the company's other passenger car tyres are in their Champiro range. The Sport Active is designed to be a replacement for the GT Radial Champiro HPY, representing a new design and styling direction for premium vehicles and a major leap forward in performance for GT Radial.
The tyre uses a tread with wide circumferential grooves to channel and disperse surface water and resist aquaplaning. Lateral sipes contribute to the short braking distance, while block stiffness ensures tight cornering and controlled handling at high speeds.
The company has a big commitment to R&D and the Sport Active was designed at its European research and development facility in Hanover, Germany. A new top tread compound contributes to the block stiffness and improves its durability and mileage.
The new tyre offers superb traction, immediate steering responsiveness, and firm grip and handling at high speeds in both dry and wet conditions; in fact, the dry braking performance is one of the best you can find. Wet braking lags somewhat behind, but it still very good.
Across the range of rim sizes, the GT Radial Sport Active is usually rated a B for its wet grip braking capability, B to C for low rolling resistance and therefore fuel economy, and V-Y for maximum speeds (149-186mph depending on your rim size). It scores an acceptable two bars for rolling noise (71-72dB) and can carry a substantial load.
Independent tests have estimated that the mileage of these tyres on a typical vehicle will be at least 40,000 kilometres on the front axle. This is around 25 per cent further than the mileage you can expect from leading rivals in this category, with the price around 20 per cent cheaper. This very decent and rounded set of specifications adds up to superb value for money. Giti has also produced an SUV version of this tyre.
