The design of the Continental Premium Contact 2 car tyre is focused on providing shorter braking distances for medium- to luxury-sized cars and is an excellent choice for summer touring on most coupes, sedans and crossovers.Continental is one of the best-known tyre manufacturers. The tyres are engineered in Germany and often feature on Audi, BMW, Volkswagen Passat and GTI, and the Nissan Qashqai - amongst others.
The Contact 2 tread uses a type of 3D groove that efficiently disperses water and gives the whole tyre superb stability in both wet and dry conditions. The groove is asymmetric, with one side cut deeper and more angular than the other. The deeper angular edge cuts through water on wet roads and gives excellent resistance to aquaplaning, while the shallow side of the tread provides better road contact for braking on dry roads. The asymmetrical block profile enables the tread to maintain its shape stiffly under all pressures from the road surface.
The result is a tyre with exceptionally short braking distances in both conditions. The Contact 2 delivers some of the best dry and wet traction you will find on any tyre in this category. Regulation EU tyre labels award these tyres an A rating. To put this in perspective, A-rated tyres are capable of 30 per cent shorter braking distance than those rated G, assuming a full set of the same tyres on an average vehicle.
Due to this high distortion resistance, the car's manoeuvrability, cornering and stability are also substantially improved. Speed rating can vary according to the hub size; however, many of these tyres are rated V, which means the maximum speed of the car can be as much as 240km/hr (149mph). Remember to check this speed rating against your vehicle's rated performance capability before buying.
Another bonus is that the increased number of tread blocks on the Contact 2, along with the open inner shoulder and continuous lateral grooves, helps to reduce the rolling noise, providing the passengers with a quieter and more comfortable ride.
Even tread wear is supported by the inclusion of two steel belts and a nylon ply inside the tyre. By ensuring the wear is evenly spread, the longevity of a tyre is increased; however, it is difficult to improve both a tyre's road grip and its durable mileage and there is a degree of trade-off between the two. The tyre's strong points are its superior handling and road safety. Our staff are always available to advise if you are in any doubt about the tyre's suitability for your vehicle.
