Interpreting tyre sizes

Tyre sizes consist of three separate elements, which together tell you what size tyre needs to be fitted to your vehicle in order for it to operate at peak efficiency and safety.

The first three digits, in this case 215, refer to the width of the tyre in millimetres.

The second two digit number defines the ratio between the height of the sidewall and the width of the tyre. The sidewall height is calculated from the wheel rim to the top of the tread, so in this instance, the sidewall height is 55% as high as the width of the tyre.

The letter R stands for Radial. Radial tyres are made of a single layer of steel cord which runs at a 90-degree angle to the tyre's centre line.

Finally, the last two numbers, in this case 18, refer to the diameter of the wheel in inches (18").

So 215 55 r18 tyres are radial tyres that are 215mm wide with a sidewall whose height is 55% of 215mm and whose diameter is 18". At Protyre, we are delighted to stock tyres in this size from a range of manufacturers from leading brands such as Pirelli and Bridgestone through to budget options.

Other choices when buying new tyres

Fitting tyres of the incorrect size can adversely impact your vehicle's handling, steering and braking, damage the tyre and the wheel well and affect the speedometer readings, increasing your chances of earning an unintentional speeding ticket.

You will also need to select tyres that are appropriate for the weather conditions, mileage and types of roads on which you will use the vehicle most frequently. Most manufacturers offer a choice of all season tyres, summer tyres and winter tyres.

In our experience, degraded and unsafe tyres are responsible for the vast majority of MOT failures. If your tyres are worn, perished, bulging, showing visible signs of damage or simply very old, you should find your nearest Protyre garage and book a free tyre check

Our tyre professionals will inspect your tyres at a time to suit you, correct your air pressure and provide tailored advice on the condition of your tyres. If new tyres are required, our expert fitters will fit them and dispose of your old tyres in a responsible manner.

Your tyre size will be listed in your owner's handbook, or you can enter your registration number on the Protyre website to find out what tyre size your vehicle requires.

Our helpful tips can also show you how to calculate what tyre size you need when selecting new tyres for your car.

Our range of tyres includes budget options at around the £70 mark through to high performance tyres from leading manufacturers, which will set you back up to £100 more per tyre.

Our tyre professionals will recommend a tyre that will satisfy your budgetary requirements as well as your driving style, mileage and the conditions in which the car will be used to ensure that you get value for money and several years of safe driving from your new tyres. You can pay with Klarna when you buy online and spread the cost over several months to ease the up front investment.
