About Sumitomo Tyres

A brief history

The history of Sumitomo Tyres can be tracked all the way back to the early 17th century when founder, Masatomo Sumitomo, opened shop in Kyoto, Japan. His business philosophy is summarised in a series of ‘Founder's Precepts’, a set of beliefs that are based on integrity and sound management practices.

Masatomo Sumitomo recognised that it takes spirit and substance to continually replenish a business, much like, in his eyes, harnessing the flow of a stream.

The ‘igeta’ symbol represents Masatomo Sumitomo's ideas and literally translates as ‘well frame’, a crosshatch framework designed to access an underground spring or well.

As an American company with roots in Japan, Sumitomo Tyres continually demonstrate an ability to draw from the well of American and Japanese heritage and bring forth fresh innovations based on technologies that last.
