PIRELLI TYRES COMPANY PROFILE
Founded in 1872, Pirelli is the world’s fifth largest tyre manufacturer based on revenues. With a presence in over 160 countries, the company now has 22 tyre manufacturing facilities on five continents and employs over 37,000 people.
Pirelli is one of the leading manufacturers of high-end and performance tyres, and is striving to become the world leader in this segment by 2015. The company has always had a keen focus on research and development, investing around 3% of revenues each year in this area: one of the highest levels of research investment in the tyre industry. The goal is to constantly improve the quality of Pirelli products in terms of performance, safety and environmental impact, all in line with the company’s ‘green performance’ strategy. In pursuing these objectives, Pirelli always aims to unite financial profitability with social responsibility.
Having been involved in motor racing since 1907, Pirelli is currently the single tyre manufacturer for Formula 1™ for the 2011-2013 championship seasons and for the World Superbike Championship. This is an important challenge in terms of technological innovation and is a key means of promoting the Pirelli brand.
The excellence of our products, the popularity of the Pirelli Calendar, our prestigious involvement in Formula 1™ and the company’s involvement in the fashion industry all contribute to the success of our brand throughout the world, such that Interbrand has estimated its value at €2.27 billion.
THE PERFECT FIT
As original equipment manufacturers, Pirelli offers more than 1,200 homologated tyres for perfect driving, based on each car brand's specific requirements for every car model. From our close partnerships with manufacturers, we have gained technological expertise in original equipment homologation that few can match and as such, we are poised to maintain our competitive edge in the long run.
Behind the creation of new marked tyres is an understanding of the dynamic and electronic "personality" of the car, together with the manufacturer's requirements. During the first design phase that lasts up to three months, Pirelli determines a tyre's specific characteristics. For example, to ensure the quietest ride possible, Pirelli would develop the footprint of the tread pattern to avoid vibrations caused by resonance between the chassis and tyre.
The effort that goes into creating customised Pirelli marked tyres is similar to the care a tailor takes in making bespoke clothing. Thorough testing is required for homologation, which takes 10 times more effort and an average of three years for a high performance tyre, compared to six months for a standard tyre.
Pirelli has long been established as one of the highest-level partners for premium car manufacturers. Thanks to the collaborative work, we have gained technological know-how that few can match and are poised to maintain our competitive edge in the long run.
An example of our dedication to innovation is the creation of our Run-Flat tyres, initially developed for BMW cars to give added peace of mind to drivers, which are now increasing in popularity with other car manufacturers.
In the final stages of homologation, which takes three to six months, the product is launched in its final form and perfected. Drivers who value performance understand there is no better-performing car than one fitted with original equipment tyres that were designed especially to suit it. For instance, the P Zero was designed to transmit more than 900bhp to the road, which perfectly complements the refined technology of the McLaren P1.
PIRELLI and F1®
Pirelli has been an integral part of motor racing since 1907. As the the single tyre manufacturer for Formula 1® for the 2014-2016 championship seasons, we embrace the ongoing challenges in technological innovation that ultimately keep us at the forefront of the industry.
PIRELLI PERFORMANCE CENTRES
At Pirelli, we are as passionate about control as we are about performance. That is why the Pirelli Performance Centre (PPC) was introduced in 1998, making it the UK's first established performance club.
The Pirelli Performance Centre has been the benchmark for the tyre industry in raising standards, equipping our network of dealers with high technical capabilities and encouraging a commitment to service.
Each PPC offers an unrivalled level of expertise in recommending, fitting and balancing high performance marked tyres, a service complemented by first class customer care and attention.
What sets it apart from the competition is the PPC has the most demanding technical audits, which PPCs have to pass twice a year. The audit itself constantly evolves to ensure the highest standards are achieved, maintained and increased in each Pirelli Performance Centre.
