Servicing for my Rolls Royce
The Rolls Royce brand dates right back to the early years of motoring in 1906. It rapidly built a reputation for the quality of its engineering that led to Rolls Royce becoming known as ‘the best car in the world’.
The company diversified into aero engines, and it was Rolls Royce engines that powered the first transatlantic flight in 1919. Plus of course, Rolls powered many of the iconic British aircraft of World War II, including the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. Back in the world of cars, Rolls acquired Bentley in 1931 and the Phantom range began production in 1936. After the war with demand for luxury cars low, Rolls Royce began making diesel engines for lorries, trains and marine use.
The company is still best known for its cars, however. The Silver Cloud of the 1950s and ‘60s was the choice of royalty and pop stars alike. The introduction of the Silver Shadow in 1965 marked Rolls’ first car to be built as a monocoque rather than with a separate chassis. In earlier times Rolls Royce often supplied only the chassis, with the bodywork being produced by independent coachbuilders. This led to a wide variety of different body styles being available with many bespoke options.
Rolls Royce Motors became a separate company in the 1970s. Thanks to the company’s quality engineering, there are many cars from this era still around and ‘70s and 80’s Rolls Royces such as the Silver Shadow and the Corniche in our experience make for surprisingly affordable classics.
Current Rolls Royce cars, including the latest Ghost, Wraith and Phantom models are made by Rolls Royce Motor Cars, a subsidiary of the BMW group. The company has its headquarters at Goodwood in West Sussex.
