Toyota Service

Toyotas have a reputation for going a long way without fuss, which is precisely why servicing gets postponed on them. Intervals are usually annual or mileage based, whichever comes first, and the schedule varies between a petrol Yaris, a diesel Hilux and a hybrid RAV4. A car that never complains still runs to a timetable.

Protyre services Toyotas at over 190 centres nationwide, hybrids included, with OEM parts fitted and guaranteed. Block exemption rules mean an independent garage can service your Toyota without affecting the manufacturer warranty, provided the correct schedule is followed and parts of matching quality are used.

Servicing a Toyota hybrid

A hybrid is in some ways less demanding to maintain and in others simply different. There is no clutch or conventional automatic gearbox on the eCVT, and regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so friction pads often last far longer than on an equivalent petrol car.

That last point has a sting in it. Pads that are barely used still sit against discs that corrode, and a hybrid can fail an MOT on disc condition while the pads look almost new. We assess both rather than measuring pad thickness alone.

Beyond the brakes, hybrid servicing takes in inverter coolant condition, the hybrid battery cooling intake and its filter, which blocks with dust and pet hair on family cars, and the 12V auxiliary battery, which is a different specification from a conventional starter battery.

One honest caveat. Toyota runs its own annual hybrid health check, which can extend cover on the hybrid battery, and that check is carried out through the Toyota franchised network. Servicing with us keeps your maintenance schedule and warranty intact, but if you are relying on that extended battery cover, keep the health check running alongside. We will happily work around it.

Toyota models we service

● Aygo, Aygo X and Yaris. City cars on short journeys, where oil and filter changes earn their keep.

● Yaris Cross, C-HR and Corolla, including Touring Sports. The core of the hybrid range, and the models where brake disc condition matters most.

● RAV4, Highlander and Land Cruiser. Heavier vehicles, often towing, so brakes, suspension, steering and SUV tyres all come under closer inspection.

● Prius and Camry. High-mileage hybrids, frequently used for private hire work, where servicing on schedule pays for itself.

● Hilux, Proace and Proace City. Working vehicles carrying weight daily. Van tyres are available for same day fitting.

● bZ4X. Fully electric, so no oil service, but brake fluid, coolant, reduction gear oil, cabin filtration and high-voltage checks all still apply.

● GR Yaris, GR86 and Supra. Performance models with larger discs and low-profile rubber, inspected and reported properly.

Items on their own schedule

Brake fluid is hygroscopic and generally needs renewing every two years whatever the mileage, and that applies to hybrids as much as anything else. Coolant, spark plugs and the cabin filter all run to their own intervals depending on engine and model year.

A Toyota AC service is worth planning rather than leaving until the vents blow warm. Every system loses refrigerant gradually, so performance tails off long before there is an outright fault. Newer Toyotas use R1234yf and older cars R134a, and the two are not interchangeable.

On conventional models, start-stop batteries are specific to the system fitted. On hybrids, the small 12V battery is a common cause of a car that will not wake up, and it is easily tested during a service.

Toyota MOT and service in one visit

Booking an MOT at the same time saves a second trip and allows anything found to be discussed face to face. On a hybrid it also means brake disc condition can be reviewed before it becomes an advisory.

Leaving maintenance late rarely saves money, as what happens when you delay car servicing explains.

Tyres, servicing and MOTs in one place

● Car Tyres from budget to premium, including Falken, Dunlop, Michelin and Continental, with same day fitting on stocked sizes.

● Car Servicing to the manufacturer schedule for Toyota and every other make and model we look after.

● MOT Testing with straightforward reporting and repairs quoted before work begins.

Tread depth is measured against the 1.6mm legal minimum at every visit, and our free tyre check and free brake check are free between services.

Toyota Servicing FAQ

The 12V auxiliary battery that starts a Toyota hybrid is checked at every service, since it is a common cause of a car that will not wake up even when the main hybrid battery is fine. A Toyota Yaris hybrid battery, meaning the larger hybrid drive battery, is a separate system covered by Toyota’s own extended warranty programme rather than a standard service item.

Toyota service cost depends on the model and service level required, so an Aygo interim and a full service on a Land Cruiser carry a different service fee. Prices at Protyre start from £99.95, with an exact figure once your registration confirms the model and drivetrain.

A Toyota MOT can be booked online alone or alongside a service, and combining the two saves a second trip. The DVSA sets the maximum legal MOT price at £54.85, and most garages, including ours, price below that.

On Toyota hybrids such as the Yaris, regenerative braking means the pads are used less than on a conventional car and often last considerably longer, though the discs can still corrode from lack of use. Aygo brake pads on a petrol-only car wear more conventionally. We check pad and disc condition together at every service rather than relying on pad thickness alone.

Toyota specifies its own approved oil grades, which differ between a conventional petrol engine and a hybrid. The correct motor oil at every Toyota oil change protects the engine and, on hybrid models, supports the electric motor’s cooling system. We confirm the exact Toyota engine oil specification from your registration before any service.
