Why are winter tyres Important?

Most drivers know that snow and ice can dramatically affect their safety on the road. Steering, acceleration and braking are more difficult as normal tyres have less grip in these conditions. However, most people also assume that as a nation we don’t have much snow and so they understandably think that they would not need them.

Winter tyres are not just for extreme weather conditions. Standard tyres are designed to operate within certain temperature ranges, approximately 7 degrees C and above. When the temperature falls lower than 7 degrees, the rubber struggles to get to an optimum temperature where it can flex and absorb as it is designed to. Winter tyres are designed to perform in temperatures of 7 degrees or significantly lower. This means that the rubber compound has been prepared in such a way that it can perform correctly in cold weather.

Tests conducted by the British Tyre Manufacturers' Association found that a car braking at 60mph on a wet road at 5°C stopped five metres shorter, equivalent to more than one car length, when fitted with winter weather tyres.

Hazardous Conditions

We tend to be pretty good at adjusting our driving styles to extreme weather condition such as snow and ice. However we are so used to our weather being a bit cold and damp, that with no visual indicators we don’t notice how much colder than normal, the temperatures really are. This is when we neglect to adjust our driving styles and this is when the performance of the tyres can be noticed, particularly those that have to endure early morning and dark night commutes to and from work, when temperatures are lower.

TyreSafe Winter Tyre Video

Our friends at Tyre Safe have a good video demonstrating the performance of both standard and winter tyres on ice:

Wet roads, cold temperatures, snow and ice can all contribute to potentially dangerous slip ups such as loss of grip aquaplaning and longer stopping distances.

Checks for all

All drivers, irrespective of whether they fit winter weather tyres or not, should carry out regular checks throughout the winter to ensure their tyres are in the best possible condition for maximum safety. This can be easier said than done due to the available daylight hours during the winter months.
