Three, two, one – and it’s over live to Seb Marshall….

By Paul Evans

He’s better known for thundering through FIA World Rally Championship stages at ferociously high speed and, with the coolest and calmest pitch-perfect pronunciation, supply impeccably timed pace notes to Kris Meeke. And we’ll soon get to hear these dulcet tones on the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship live streaming service, as Seb Marshall is joining the Special Stage TV production team for the opening round of the series, the Legend Fires North West Stages.

It’s a great honour to have Seb as the first special guest commentator, as he is in high demand by the likes of WRC TV.

Seb will join former rally co-driver Howard Davies, who will once again head up the commentary team.

Almost one million viewers have watched the live web-streaming coverage of the Asphalt Rally Championship on Facebook over the last two years, with a total of 458,000 tuning in for the 2018 season and 479,800 in 2019 – making it by far the largest on-line audience of any British national rally championship.

Seb will be in Garstang for the ceremonial start on the night of Friday 20 March, before heading out to some carefully selected stage-side positions during the running of the event the following day. He’s already had a good look over all of the 14 closed road stages, having done a spectator guide for the event organisers, Motorsport North West.

“I’m looking forward to joining Howard [Davies] and the Special Stage team for the North West Stages,” said Seb. “The event has developed from a blast around Blackpool Promenade and some military roads to a really challenging closed road event. The stages are really good, and vary from quite technical narrow sections to some very quick sections. It will be a good test for the crews and a fitting start to the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship.

“I’ll certainly have a lot to commentate on, as the event has received a fantastic entry. There will be a very strong top twenty and real depth of quality right the way through the classes, and I’m really looking forward to watching the action unfold from the side of the stages.”

Understanding the EU tyre label

The Tyre Label is a mark for motor vehicle tyres. Manufacturers of tyres for cars, light and heavy trucks must specify fuel consumption, wet grip and noise classification of every tyre sold in EU markets starting in November 2012

Noise level rating

This is a measurement in decibels(dB) of the noise created between the tyre and the road. It is represented by 3 bars with a single bar being the lowest level of noise.

Fuel efficiency rating

Rolling resistance is used to measure how fuel efficient a tyre is. The less resistant a tyre is the less fuel it will use to move the vehicle.

A is for the highest performing tyres
G is the least performing

Fuel efficiency rating

The basis for wet grip is the absolute stopping distance when driving 80 km per hour. Between each class, there are 3–6 metres difference in braking distance. Classes "D" and "G" are not used for passenger cars.
