Motorcycle Tyres for my Harley-Davidson Street Glide Motorcycle

The Street Glide has the stripped-down look that is pure Harley-Davidson, yet you could tour for months with the amount you can carry on it. Just make sure you’ve got the right tyres, for great handling on even the trickiest roads.

Tyre specifications on the Street Glide

On this bike, both sets of brakes, front and rear, are linked electronically. The ABS system applies precisely the correct amount of braking to each tyre, no matter what the road condition is. The specification for the front tyre is BW 130/70B18 63H. The back tyre is BW 180/65B16 81H. So that’s quite a difference. The front tyre is 130 width with a profile of 70. The back tyre is 180 width with a profile of 65. Front tyre loading is 63; back tyre loading is 81. The “H” refers to the speed rating - High.
If you’ve bought your bike second hand, you may find that someone has fitted the wrong tyres - this will definitely degrade both driving performance and safety, so it’s a good thing to check. If they are wrong, prioritise a refit.

Choosing the right tyres for your Harley-Davidson Street Glide

Front tyres for the Street Glide

At the top of the 130/70 range is the Dunlop Elite 4. This has the same rim size, speed rating and load classification as recommended by Harley Davidson, and you’ll find this in all the bike tyres in this size.
If you’re looking for a tyre that combines great performance when touring with a great price, Protyre recommends the Bridgestone Battlax BT 45. This touring tyre has a large crown radius which contributes to stability when the bike is being used for high speed touring. A centre compound on the tyre gives great mileage and makes the tyre durable. The tread edge compound gives traction and grip for safe cornering. For added grip and braking in wet conditions, the tyre compound has silica in it.

Back tyres for the Street Glide

If you enter the 180/65B16 81H specification, you’ll find both Dunlop and Michelin tyres. The Dunlop D407 is the result of a collaboration between Dunlop and Harley-Davidson engineers and it uses multi-tread technology to deliver great performance, with enhanced handling in wet conditions. The Michelin Scorcher 31 boasts a new balanced performance in a premium bike tyre.
