Built between 2002 and 2008 at Honda’s Ohio plant in the US, the Honda VTX 1300 is very much a long-distance cruiser in the style of marques such as Harley Davidson. It has a 1,312cc two-cylinder engine in retro-styled bodywork. Disc brakes front and rear ensure safe stopping.

Unlike the fuel injected VTX 1800, the 1300 has a carburettor and a manual choke. This has a clever design where the carb is heated by engine coolant to improve running in cold conditions. The V-twin engine uses counterbalance shafts to reduce vibration and deliver smooth running.

The early model, the VTX 1300S, used spoked wire wheels. From 2005 versions with cast alloy wheels became available in the form of the shorter and lighter VTX 1300C - short for custom. 2005 also saw the launch of the VTX 1300R (Retro) with more traditional styling, and again alloy wheels. In 2008, the S model was replaced by the better equipped VTX 1300T (Tourer) and the wire wheels were dropped from all variants meaning that all Honda VTX 1300 tyres could now be tubeless types.

The VTX 1300 is lighter than its 1800 cousin and so feels nimbler and more responsive. This makes it a better choice for UK roads. This is still very much a bike for touring, however, with a comfortable seat and low handlebars. The official Honda dealer extras - panniers, passenger backrest and a windscreen, all of which are fitted as standard on the Tourer version - reflect the use to which these machines are likely to be put. This also means that Honda VTX 1300 tyres tend to be geared to providing a smooth, compliant ride rather than ultimate grip.

In 2009 the bike was replaced by the VT1300C ‘Fury’ which remains in production. This uses an updated version of the VTX’s powertrain but with a new frame.
