The overall look of the Freewheeler draws inspiration from history. The influences of the old Servi-Car trike are obvious in the wide front forks and chrome beer-can covers. Harley have stuck with a very basic instrument panel featuring a basic single clock which displays all the speedometer and tachometer functions. In terms of comfort, the deep-scoop seat is just 27.5 inches high and has an almost non-existent passenger seat behind it, so this machine is clearly designed for solo rides.
The power comes from the Milwaukee-Eight engine, which is completely new. It features many modern additions, including targeted oil cooling. The exhaust components have been rearranged so the catalytic converter is now further away from the seat for comfort. The engine statistics are impressive. This pushrod-operated, overhead valve engine with self-adjusting hydraulic lifters has two valves per cylinder and delivers 1746 cc.
Running your Harley will not break the bank thanks to the electronic fuel-injection system, which will give you 43 mpg. The six-speed manual transmission delivers a relaxed feel when cruising, yet all you have to do is drop it down to fifth gear and you have enough power to overtake quickly and safely.
There are all-new counter balancers in the engine which reduce the characteristic shake. Purists who enjoyed this classically Harley characteristic may not be too pleased about this, but there is no denying that it makes long journeys more bearable for the driver.
This is not a small bike. The frame is built from the ground up so that it can withstand the unique forces that are exerted when a three-wheel vehicle takes a corner, especially at speed. The construction is of mild tubular steel with 49mm front forks and a 65.7 inch wheelbase.
The rear tyres are wide (205/65 R15) and fit on cast aluminium “Enforcer” rims. This allows all the torque to be directed into the acceleration because there is so much stability and traction in those two rear wheels.
