MOTs are a legal, annual requirement for all vehicles over three years of age in the UK, so chances are, you need one. To protect yourself from the threat of fines and keep your vehicle on the road, use our tool above.

There are no strings or obligations – just a quick and clear way to check your MOT due date online, find out whether the vehicle has a valid MOT certificate, and when it’s due to expire. After that, find your local Protyre garage and book your MOT, ready for your appointment. If you have any questions, get in touch online or call us on 0333 060 2294.

When is your MOT due?

In the UK, every car needs to have an MOT after it’s been on the road for three years, then every single year after. That means every vehicle has an MOT due date.

Aside from if you have a new vehicle, where its first UK MOT date will be three years after the date the car was first registered, you can find out when your MOT is due on your car by performing an MOT certificate check. You should have been issued an MOT certificate at your last MOT, but if you can’t find it, that’s fine: use our MOT expiry checker above for free instead.

Protyre's FREE UK MOT Checker helps drivers find out the MOT test status of their vehicle. Once you have checked the date of your MOT, book your vehicle into your local Protyre garage.

How to check when your MOT is due

If you’re wondering how to check your MOT, doing so is simple. Use our completely free MOT due date checker tool at the top of the page and you’ll instantly see when your MOT is due.

Alternatively, go through your vehicle papers and find your MOT test certificate. You should be able to check when it will expire. You can book an MOT any time before this, however if you wish to keep the same expiry date, your booking must be at most one month before the MOT due date.

It’s important to do this as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will not contact you if your MOT date is approaching.

Why it’s important to check when your MOT is due

There are several reasons why everyone should check their MOT due date, including:

  • It’s a legal requirement – Every driver has an obligation to get an MOT, on the basis that it keeps other road users, passengers, pedestrians, and road infrastructure safe from harm. It’s illegal not to have one if your car is over three years old.
  • You won’t be able to drive – If your car has missed its MOT date, you can only drive it to an MOT testing station or workshop. If you are stopped by the police and don’t have an appointment letter to show them, your trip will also be illegal.
  • You could be fined £1,000 – If you are found to be driving your car without an MOT, you can be fined up to £1,000. The police can check vehicle number plates via automatic recognition systems, so a quick drive in a car that’s passed its MOT due date can turn into a court summons just as fast.
  • It will give you time to find issues – Many people get a pre-MOT due date service conducted on their car or check their vehicles themselves. By knowing when your MOT is due, you can perform all necessary checks and be surer you will pass without attracting any MOT failure codes, potentially saving money in the process.
