When to Replace Your Car Battery and Cost

By David Sholicar

A car battery is meant to last between 2 and 6 years. How long a battery actually lasts depends on the type, the car using it, how much and how far the car is driven, the battery's age, and temperature changes.

A car battery is meant to last between 2 and 6 years. How long a battery actually lasts depends on the type, the car using it, how much and how far the car is driven, the battery's age, and temperature changes.

Better quality batteries generally last longer. Batteries in cars driven regularly for 30 minutes or more tend to last longer than those in cars only making short or rare trips, since those vehicles have fewer chances to recharge the battery while driving.

But eventually, every car will need its battery replaced. Knowing new battery costs helps when budgeting for a replacement.

When to get a new car battery

There are signs a battery is failing like difficulty starting, car electrics not working well, the start-stop feature stopping, or the battery warning light coming on.

If your battery is over 5 years old, replacing it makes sense since failure could happen anytime. This matters more if you rely on your car, especially in bad weather.

Choosing a new battery

Many replace batteries with the same make and model already fitted in the car. But if a new one costs too much, a cheaper alternative works provided it's the same size and shape, the terminals connect to your car's connections, and it delivers enough power to start your car and run electrics efficiently.

Modern cars need more battery power for features like AC, heated seats, USB charging, sensors, and lights. Diesels and bigger engines usually need more battery power than a small petrol hatchback.

Our qualified fitters can recommend the best battery for your needs from our large stock.

Cost of a battery

Budget batteries cost around £40. Better quality ones with longer warranties cost £100+. Luxury vehicles and those with complex electrics need more battery power, costing up to £300.

When you book a free battery check at Protyre, we’ll advise options and help select the best new battery for your vehicle.

How to make your battery last

Batteries last longer with maintenance. Always turn off electrics before exiting your car to reduce battery drain.

Avoid temperature extremes by parking in shade when hot out and sheltering your car in cold weather.

Driving 30+ minutes weekly recharges the battery, helping efficiency and lifespan.

Consider disconnecting the battery if your car won't be used for a prolonged time so it doesn't drain. Protect screws, clamps, terminals and cables from dirt and damp to avoid corrosion if disconnected.

AGM and EFB Battery Fitments Explained
If you have a Start-Stop engine, you need a Start-Stop battery. These batteries have been developed specifically for Start-Stop engines and can quickly recover power lost as a result of starting the engine. On many modern cars, the battery isn’t where you think it might be; other than in the engine bay, the battery can be found in the boot, under the passenger seat or under flooring. It can take up to two hours to change the battery on some vehicles! Even if the battery is in the traditional area, it can take a long time to fit a replacement battery; the battery box may be under another part or tucked behind a difficult to remove piece of equipment.

What are the essential check-ups during a car service?
A Protyre service specifies precisely the items checked and serviced, as does an MOT, but the ones “essential” to check are the ones that are going to go wrong. Since all vehicles and all drivers are different, the things most likely to need attention differ too. However, our qualified fitters are familiar with the foibles of different cars and can advise you about the appropriate service details based on the model and age.
