How long does an air conditioning regas take?

By David Sholicar

Although it may not always be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about your vehicle's maintenance, in our experience ensuring that you keep your air con system in good working order is important. Especially on those hot summer days – or even on those cold winter ones!

Air Con Regas

Here at Protyre, we suggest an air con regas every two years to keep it in prime condition, although if you notice any issues with your air con before this time, you should, of course, get it checked out. Our professional engineers are certified with a Safe Handling of Refrigerants certificate – a legal requirement – so you can be certain that, if you choose us for your air con re-gassing, your car will be in safe and qualified hands at all times.
Air con re-gassing is an important part of vehicle maintenance because it ensures that your air con system is working when you need it most. During a regas, the old refrigerant gas is taken out of your system and is completely replaced with fresh gas. Since the gases degrade over time, this ensures that your air-con system stays cool when you need it.

The whole process takes around 45 minutes.
At Protyre, years of experience tell us that it is never a good idea to attempt to carry out an air con regas yourself, it is always better to leave it in the hands of a trained professional. Getting it wrong could cause unnecessary damage to your vehicle and land you with a hefty repair bill. In addition, the gas used in your air con system could cause painful burns to your skin if it is not handled correctly.
If you are unsure as to whether or not your air con system needs regassing, it is a good idea to check the temperature of the air coming from your vehicle's vents. The air should be coming through at 5-10 degrees C if the outside temperature is around 30 degrees C. If it feels warmer than usual, or if your air-con is making no difference to your vehicle's ambient temperature, even when it is fully switched on, then it is likely time for a regas.
As with any system within your vehicle, regular running of your air con is always a good idea. Regular maintenance means your air con will be ready to use whenever you need it, such as during winter, when your windows need demisting, and in the summer, when the temperature inside your vehicle begins to rise.
Along with air con regassing, here at Protyre, we stock a wide range of tyres, from premium brands such as Pirelli and Bridgestone, to mid-range and budget options, including Falken and Autogrip. This means that whichever tyre you require, you are sure to find it with us.
