Choosing the Best Oil for Your Van: A Complete Guide for Optimal Performance

By Julia Freeman

Oil plays an extremely-important role when it comes to protecting your van's engine. It lubricates all components, reduces friction, and serves to prevent the moving parts from overheating.

Different types of oil

There are several different types of oil that can be used in van engines.

Mineral oil is derived from crude oil and is the most basic type. It is cheap, but it lags behind others when it comes to performance and durability.

Synthetic oil is specially designed to provide superior protection and performance. This type of oil is made using complex chemical processes. It is more expensive, but it does offer noticeably better engine protection and improved fuel economy.

Semi-synthetic oil is a mixture of the two. It offers a good balance in terms of affordability and performance.

High mileage oil is designed for older vehicles which have covered a lot of miles. It contains special ingredients which help to prevent leaks, condition the seals, and minimise overall oil consumption.

Oil viscosity and grades

The viscosity of engine oil is essentially how 'easily' it pours at a certain temperature. Oils are graded based on this. There are two main grade types: monograde and multigrade.

What oil for my van?

It is important to refer to your owner's manual or consult a qualified mechanic to determine the best type and viscosity of oil for your particular vehicle.

If your oil level is running low, the oil indicator on your dashboard may start to flash. This is important information. To discover what it means, take a look at our guide

You can check your oil levels using the oil dipstick. Ensure that your van is on level ground and the engine is cold. Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick (usually, it will have an orange or yellow handle). Pull out the dipstick and wipe away any excess oil from the end with a cloth. Re-insert it and then remove again, and turn it horizontally to read the oil level. If the level of oil is low, add around a litre of oil. If the oil smells bad or is dirty, you may need to change the oil and/or the filter.

AGM and EFB Battery Fitments Explained
If you have a Start-Stop engine, you need a Start-Stop battery. These batteries have been developed specifically for Start-Stop engines and can quickly recover power lost as a result of starting the engine. On many modern cars, the battery isn’t where you think it might be; other than in the engine bay, the battery can be found in the boot, under the passenger seat or under flooring. It can take up to two hours to change the battery on some vehicles! Even if the battery is in the traditional area, it can take a long time to fit a replacement battery; the battery box may be under another part or tucked behind a difficult to remove piece of equipment.
