Volvo S80

Volvo S80 Tyres

The Volvo S80 mid-sized saloon car spans two generations that were produced between 1998 to 2016. The Swedish car manufacturer, based in Gothenburg, is a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant Geely, as are Lotus Cars and Proton.

Volvo is well known for producing robust, solid cars. The newer versions of the S80 model are more eco-friendly and have lower running costs than the older versions. The 4-door luxury saloon comes in front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants.

The S80 competes with the BMW 5 Series, the Audi A6 and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while enjoying a lower insurance group and therefore a lower insurance premium than its competitors. The Volvo S80 should also be cheaper to service because of its two-year or 18,000 mile service interval.

The first generation Volvo S80 was built between 1998 and 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was also produced in Halifax, in the Nova Scotia province of Canada for the US market. The model came with safety systems including side-impact and whiplash protection.

The second generation, which includes an estate model, was produced between 2006 and 2016 after which it was replaced with the second generation Volvo S90. The second generation S80 included updated safety features such as collision warning and auto brake. Volvo’s City Safety technology was included as standard from 2012, while an infotainment system became standard in 2014.

The diesel-powered S80 is the most popular and most common model. The 2.4-litre models were joined by a 2 litre version in 2009, while a 1.6D DRIVe model was launched the same year as a more economical alternative. It was ultimately replaced with the D3 a year later.
