BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Tyres
Launched at 2019’s Frankfurt motor show, the BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe is a four-door saloon, but with the sleek styling of a coupe. Based on the same underpinnings as the normal 8-Series, it offers extra space and practicality thanks to its additional doors. The model is intended to take on competitors including the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes CLS with prices starting at around £69,000.
From the front, the Gran Coupe looks pretty much identical to its two-door sibling, but move to the side and the differences become apparent. Although it still has a long, raked rear window, the angle is slightly steeper than in the two-door, giving better headroom for rear seat passengers. There’s also a bigger boot to accommodate their luggage.
Overall, the car is just over 230mm longer than the two-door coupe and 28mm wider, making it the widest car BMW currently produces. Aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic have been used to keep weight down but as you might expect, it’s still 70 Kgs heavier in four-door form, however, this doesn’t blunt performance too much, with a 0-60mph time of just 3.9 seconds for the sporty M850i.
The standard versions are no slouches either, with the 840i reaching 60 in 5.1 seconds and even the 840d diesel getting there in 5.2. All models are electronically limited to a top speed of 155mph. All of that performance is handled by the xDrive four-wheel-drive system which under normal conditions sends all of the power to the rear, but switches power to the front when needed to deliver power through all the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé tyres.
Under the bonnet is a 3.0 litre turbocharged straight six in the 840i, the diesel is also a 3.0 litre six. The range topping M850i comes with a 4.4 litre V8 fitted with twin turbos.
Inside the car has BMW’s iDrive system to handle infotainment functions. There are digital screens both for the main instruments and in the centre of the dash for navigation and entertainment. There’s also touchscreen control for the central screen, along with voice and gesture support so you can choose how you interact with the car’s systems. There is, as you might expect, a plethora of standard kit including a head-up display, active parking system and the ability to interact via Amazon Alexa and Google digital assistants as well as your smartphone. There’s wireless phone charging too. Those sitting in the back have separate climate functions and their own USB ports for connecting and charging gadgets.
