Why do drivers love Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres

Tyres are critical for both performance and safety, so it is little wonder there is such a vast amount of material discussing the options available and the pros and cons of about every make and model. Whilst this can be extremely useful, some people may feel a little overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of different tyres and brands on the market.

Whilst there are dozens of manufacturers, there is a consensus that a few of these stand out above the others. One of these is Goodyear.

Popular Goodyear tyres

Some of the most popular and highly rated Goodyear tyres on the market today include the EfficientGrip range and the Eagle F1 Asymmetric range.

Goodyear EfficientGrip range

This popular range of high performance tyres includes the EfficientGrip, EfficientGrip Performance, EfficientGrip Performance 2, EfficientGrip 2 SUV, EfficientGrip Compact and Compact 2, and EfficientGrip Cargo 2. These tyres offer low fuel consumption, excellent performance, and impressive reliability.

Goodyear EfficientGrip

The Goodyear EfficientGrip is a summer tyre designed for use on passenger cars. It is designed to improve fuel efficiency whilst still delivering excellent performance. The EfficientGrip has an environmentally friendly design and offers superb fuel economy, excellent braking in wet and dry conditions, outstanding rolling resistance, and a quiet and comfortable overall driving experience.

The key features of this tyre include FuelSaving technology, a silica tread compound, a variable tread-block angle, and arrangement, and innovative sipe positioning and channels for better water dispersal. This tyre also features patented RunOnFlat technology, which enables safe driving even in the event of a puncture, and Rim Protection technology, which protects the tyre and rim against kerb damage. This tyre is available in a variety of sizes from 15" to 20".

EfficientGrip Performance

The EfficientGrip Performance offers improved grip with reduced braking distances. It is B-rated for wet grip, A-rated for fuel efficiency, has low rolling resistance, and offers a quiet and comfortable ride. It features special ACTIVE Braking technology, increasing contact between the tyre and the road surface, resulting in shorter braking distances. It uses Fuel Saving technology to reduce the tyre's energy dissipation, delivering a significant reduction in rolling resistance and a subsequent improvement in fuel efficiency. Goodyear's Wear Control technology is utilised to ensure an optimal balance between excellent wet grip and low rolling resistance for the whole lifecycle of the tyre.

EfficientGrip 2 SUV

This tyre has been specifically designed for SUVs such as the Range Rover, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, or VW Tiguan.

This tyre features several specialist Goodyear technologies, including Mileage Plus technology which utilises high tread-elasticity and flexibility resulting in less fractures on rough roads, Wet Braking technology offering lower compound-stiffness and more gripping edges, and Dry Braking technology with larger central ribs and more contact surface. All these combine to reduce braking distances and improve fuel efficiency and mileage.

This tyre is available in sizes from 17" to 19", is A-rated for wet grip, B-rated for fuel efficiency, and B-rated for exterior noise.

EfficientGrip Compact

The EfficientGrip Compact is a fuel-saving, eco-friendly tyre for smaller cars offering long life and confident handling in both the wet and the dry.

It features a stiffer tread design that reduces rolling resistance, increasing fuel efficiency, and lowers CO2 emissions. The cavities are rounder, helping to prevent the accumulation of water and reduce the risk of aquaplaning. The specially designed tread features extra-large sipes, dual wide grooves, and multiple biting edges, which mean it can cut through surface water and offer improved braking in the wet. The tyre is slightly lighter than others which also helps to improve rolling resistance. Pressure distribution is optimised, which promotes more even tyre wear and increases lifespan.

EfficientGrip Compact 2

The EfficientGrip Compact 2 is the latest iteration of this summer tyre that is designed for smaller cars. It offers better mileage and fuel efficiency, enhanced braking performance, and improved aquaplaning resistance compared to its predecessor.

EfficientGrip Cargo 2

This is the latest generation of Goodyear's summer van and light truck tyre. Available in sizes from 14 to 17-inches, this tyre features enhanced tread durability (around 38% better than its predecessor), shorter wet braking distances, and improved resistance to harsh road conditions and hot temperatures.

The EfficientGrip Cargo 2 is C-rated for fuel efficiency, B-rated for wet grip, and B-rated for exterior noise.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6

Outside of the EfficientGrip range, one of the most popular Goodyear tyres is the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6. This is a summer tyre designed to be fitted to high-performance cars.

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is designed to deliver outstanding braking and handling on wet roads, without compromising on comfort. It features Impulse Control Compound technology that delivers shorter braking distances, ActiveBraking technology that provides reliable grip and braking, and Power Cushion technology which helps to give more precise and sporty handling in dry conditions. It also features Rim Protection technology.

Does driving speed affect a car's tyre longevity
People expect racing tyres to wear out faster than everyday driving tyres due to the extreme forces placed upon them by hard accelerating, braking and sharp cornering combined with little to no tread depth. However, it may come as a surprise to some that your driving speed can affect the tyre life on your own vehicle too.

What should your tyre pressure be?
Heavily laden cars, or vehicles that are towing, should have a little extra air pressure in their tyres to maintain the tyre’s profile and contact area with the road.

Is 5mm tread on car tyres still good to drive on?
Driving with insufficient tread on your tyres is not only a safety issue but also a legal one. Failure to drive with tyres with sufficient tread can incur a fine of up to £2,500 plus three penalty points - for each tyre affected. Checking your tyres regularly will mean you don't end up making a costly error.
