Tyre Comparison

By Alistair Crumley

You probably don’t give a great deal of thought to your vehicle’s tyres on a day-to-day basis. Yet it’s your tyres that help to keep you and other road users safe.

Nowadays there’s a bewildering choice of options when it’s time to fit new tyres to your vehicle. From premium to budget tyres, summer and winter options and a huge array of tread patterns, how do you decide which tyres are the best option for your circumstances?

All Season Tyres

All season tyres can be used throughout the year. They should provide you with an excellent driving experience through the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter, making them an extremely popular choice for the majority of motorists. But if you spend a lot of time driving on icy, wintry roads, then you might find it preferable to opt for dedicated winter tyres.

Winter tyres

Winter tyres provide unrivalled levels grip on icy roads, but when summer comes along, you won’t benefit from the same level of performance. This is where you need a set of dedicated summer tyres, which are designed to cope with the demands of dry roads, and hot weather conditions.

Run Flat Tyres

Run flat tyres are a fairly new innovation, which have become much more widespread now that so many new cars don’t come with a spare tyre. This could easily leave you stranded by the roadside with a flat tyre, but thanks to run-flat technology, you’ll still be able to drive home safely, or to your nearest Protyre garage, albeit at reduced speed and for a limited range. That’s because these tyres are created with extremely strong and rigid sidewalls.

Cost of Tyre Replacement

But of course, one of the biggest comparisons affecting tyres is the cost. Premium brands, such as; Pirelli clearly cost more than mid-range or budget models, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Superior construction methods and materials provide enhanced road-handling, but that doesn’t mean that a budget tyre won’t serve you just as well. It may not have the longevity of its more expensive cousin, but it will still be fit for purpose so you can make your purchase with confidence.
