Is Yokohama a good tyre brand?

By Julia Freeman

When it comes to tyres, there is an astonishing choice available. According to the British Tyre Manufacturer's Association (BTMA), there are over 160 tyre manufacturers spread across 45 countries around the globe, and over 200 brands of tyre are available for sale in the UK alone. Four manufacturers currently dominate the market: Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Continental.

Outside of the big four, one of the most commonly-bought tyre brands is Yokohama.

Made by the Yokohama Rubber Company, a Japanese firm founded over 100 years ago, Yokohama tyres are available for a wide range of vehicles, including passenger cars, SUVs and Crossovers, performance cars, trucks, and minivans. The Yokohama Rubber Company is committed to developing eco-friendly products and reducing the emissions from its manufacturing processes. Yokohama tyres are 80% petroleum-free, and some of the oils used are derived from orange peel.

Yokohama have several popular ranges - notably their Advan, Avid, BluEarth, Geolander, and Parada ranges.

Yokohama Advan Sport V103S

The Advan Sport V103S is a high-performance, low noise summer tyre designed for use on sports cars, high-powered saloons, and even supercars. The V103S provides sensational performance, exceptional handling and braking in extreme conditions, and maintains comfort and low noise. It is available in wide sizes and has an impressive speed rating. Features include a high grip compound able to deal with differing temperatures, an innovative asymmetric tread design, and exclusive construction that can deal with high loading stress and high speeds. This tyre is approved as OE for a wide range of vehicles, including the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Porsche 911 Carrera 4, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg.

Yokohama Avid Ascend GT

The Avid Ascend GT is a premium all-season tyre designed to be fitted to crossovers, high performance cars, minivans, passenger cars, or SUVs. It features an asymmetric tread design, unique TriBLEND compound, 3D sipes, deep circumferential grooves, and adaptive outside shoulder and offers impressive handling, powerful braking on wet/snowy roads, all-season traction, and a smooth and quiet ride.

Yokohama BluEarth ES ES32

The Yokohama BluEarth is a summer tyre designed for use on compacts and smaller family cars. It has been specifically designed to be environmentally friendly. It features a special compound that is derived from orange peel and offers fuel-saving performance, long tread life, enhanced wet and dry grip, and improved reliability. This tyre is available in 69 sizes and the new, improved rubber blend delivers low rolling resistance.

Yokohama Parada Spec 2

The Parada Spec 2 is an Ultra-High Performance (UHP) summer tyre for premium passenger cars. This tyre features large diagonal tread blocks for maximum grip, helical long grooves to enhance wet traction, and ultra-low void shoulders that enhance stability.

Yokohama Geolander G033

Yokohama Geolander G033

The Geolander G033 is fitted as original equipment to the Mitsubishi Pajero iO but can be used on a number of similar vehicles (SUVs and 4x4s). This all-season tyre offers high-level performance, good grip levels in light off-road conditions, and a quiet and comfortable ride.

Overall, Yokohama tyres offer consistently good quality, reliability, and durability. They are recommended by car manufacturers, including Audi, Lexus, Honda, and Toyota and have been fitted as the Original Equipment (OE) on cars from these makers. In our experience, good tyre brands are characterised by a commitment to innovation, quality and performance - and put drivers (as opposed to profit) at the centre of their business. We feel that Yokohama are one of the brands that does this.

As well as Yokohama tyres, Protyre offer a huge range of tyres from other manufacturers. This includes premium tyres from brands including Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Michelin; mid range tyres from manufacturers such as Falken, GT Radial, and Sumitomo; and low-cost/economy tyres from brands including Ovation, Budget, and Autogrip. Protyre sell summer tyres, winter tyres, all-season tyres, 4x4 tyres, and motorcycle tyres.

Does driving speed affect a car's tyre longevity
People expect racing tyres to wear out faster than everyday driving tyres due to the extreme forces placed upon them by hard accelerating, braking and sharp cornering combined with little to no tread depth. However, it may come as a surprise to some that your driving speed can affect the tyre life on your own vehicle too.
