How Much Should a Set of 4 New Tyres Cost?

By Mariana Saenzpardo

Having a new set of tyres fitted on your car sounds quite a big deal, but it can be achieved without breaking the bank. So, what tyres are available and how much should you spend on a new set of tyres?

When it comes to tyres, there are three main categories available: premium, budget, and mid-range.

Premium

Premium tyres are those with higher price tags from globally recognised brands. They are subject to very thorough testing, durable and are designed by expert engineers. Many premium tyres will include leading-edge technology that will ultimately find its way into mid-range and budget tyres. They are popular with drivers who cover substantial mileage, together with track drivers and off-roaders.

Mid-range

These are an ever-popular option as they provide a balance between the durability and quality associated with premium tyres but at a more appealing price tag.

Budget

As the name suggests, these are low-cost tyres. These are the ideal option if you are short on cash and need your tyres changing as a matter of urgency.

So, how much should I spend on a new set of tyres? And what can I get for what price?

Premium

  • Continental PremiumContact 6. This tyre gives excellent performance in all conditions. It is also a notably quiet tyre.

  • Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. This is a great tyre for all-round performance and fuel economy. It resists aquaplaning in corners and also provides superb grip and stability in the dry.

Mid-range

  • Falken Ziex ZE310 Ecorun. These Falkens offer superb grip and traction on both dry and wet roads with enhanced performance, extra aquaplaning resistance, shorter braking distance and enhanced noise reduction.

  • Sumitomo BC100. These tyres combine precision engineering and superior quality at a very competitive price.

  • GT Radial 4Seasons. These tyres have dual ultra-wide grooves, a wide central rib, multiple deep sipes, stiff shoulders and a full silica compound. These features mean that they provide resistance to aquaplaning, short braking distances on wet surfaces, dry road comfort, excellent grip on all surfaces, consistent grip, and good overall lifespan / mileage.

Budget

  • Runway Enduro HP. These tyres offer strong performance and have an advanced asymmetrical design.

What am I getting if I pay premium prices?

All tyres have to meet a minimum set of safety standards, but premium and many mid-range tyres will have been tested to performance standards above and beyond the minimum. It is likely that they will also have benefited from far greater time and financial investment in their design and production.

Should I avoid budget tyres?

As with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Whilst the headline price may be lower, lifespan tends to be shorter and you will need to weigh up the total cost of ownership.
