They can check out the damage and let you know whether you’ll need a tyre replacement or whether a repair is possible. Whatever happens, our fully qualified fitters will have you back on the road as soon as possible thanks to their skill and professionalism.
Repair or replace?
Whether you can get your tyre repaired or replaced will depend on the condition of the tyre and the location of the puncture:
If your tyre has been punctured by an object such as a nail, the puncture can be repaired provided that it’s no more than ¼ inch in diameter and occurs in the tread area of the tyre, otherwise known as the minor repair area
If there are multiple punctures, they can be repaired on condition that they’re 16 inches or more apart
If the puncture occurs in or next to the sidewall of the tyre, it can’t be repaired and must be replaced for safety reasons
Our qualified fitters can assess if the damage is too severe to be repaired, and they’ll recommend your tyre is replaced if it shows signs of any of the following:
Illegal tread depth below 1.6mm
Bead damage
Exposed cords
Signs of deteriorating or ageing rubber
Faulty or poor quality previous repairs
The problem with run flats
If your car is fitted with run flat tyres, then you’ll love the convenience of being able to drive safely home or to your nearest Protyre garage if you suffer a puncture. Unfortunately, we can’t repair run flat tyres as it’s impossible to tell the extent of the damage and whether the tyre wall has been compromised since the additional strength of the sidewall can act to mask any issues.
There’s also no way of knowing whether the tyre has been driven too far or too fast and is therefore structurally compromised in a way that would be dangerous to repair. At Protyre we always put your safety first, which is why we cannot repair run flat tyres and recommend that you replace them if they’ve suffered a puncture.
Take care of your tyres
Punctures can happen to anyone, but well-maintained tyres last longer and are more likely to be repairable than unchecked and neglected tyres.
Check the pressure every month and before you go on a long journey
Check your tyres for signs of age such as cracking, bulging, and uneven wear; five-year-old tyres should be checked annually, 10-year-old tyres should be replaced immediately – check the tyre sidewall for the date of manufacture
Check tyres for wear and rotate them regularly to ensure they wear evenly
