I'm a key worker and need cheap tyres fitted at home – is this possible?

By Julia Freeman

Quieter roads may be a benefit of the lockdown, but the need to keep vehicles roadworthy has never been greater. Without food deliveries, care workers, and engineers, the lockdown would be impossible and the harm far worse.

With social distancing in force and many businesses closed, a lot of people are deferring essential maintenance until things go back to normal. That is neither necessary nor wise. The government has made it clear that essential services should be protected from closure. Building works, repair services, transportation, and consumable supplies all fall into the category of essential social infrastructure.

Everyone is still entitled to access essential services, such as vehicle maintenance, as usual. Those who are in professions that are particularly important for everyone’s welfare, such as nurses and care workers, deserve a little more than usual service. Many of us are doing our bit: for example, British Rail has set aside free parking spaces and many shops that don’t normally do deliveries are putting in extra hours to make house calls.

We can come to you

If you need cheap tyres fitted at home, you don’t need to worry about exorbitant call-out charges. At Protyre we have encouraged our member garages to provide extra mobile tyre fitting crews. The charge for making house calls has always been moderate but during the lockdown, you will find that many are happy to go the extra mile – especially for anyone in a key profession.

Our tyre professionals are equipped with protective clothing and car seat covers, as well as hygiene consumables. They will conduct your tyre fitting (or other essential maintenance) without breaking social distancing protocols, and you can make payment using the Protyre website, avoiding the risks of money handling.

The Protyre website makes it easy for you to find a centre with a mobile crew available and to choose your appointment time.

Choosing your tyres

You can also use the website to choose your tyres online before you call, but if you need advice our tyre professionals will be happy to help.

Although budget brands such as Ovation and Autogrip are decent tyres, some of the better-known brands such as Falken or Sumitomo often match them on price. For example, check out the Sumitomo BC100 – a great all-rounder. Sumitomo also owns Falken, and the Falken Sincera is another affordably priced tyre. Every penny counts during these difficult times.

When is the best time to buy new tyres?

Whether you are a key worker or not, when lockdown is lifted we will all be busier than ever. There will be surges in demand for all the things postponed in recent months. That could mean new shortages and long delays for essential services. We will all be working harder to repair the economy, with less time and more miles to travel.

Book with Protyre

Without doubt, the best time to renew your tyres and service your car is now. We are giving priority to key workers but if any of your tyres are looking their age or you have any vehicle worries at all, please do get in contact to discuss any our services further, including our Protyre mobile tyre fitting. We have same day appointments available across much of our range, so book now using our easy-to-use online booking form, or speak with your local centre for more information.

New Tyre Labelling Changes - EU Law from 1st May 2021
The new design is a result of the European Union introducing new tyre labelling legislation in Europe (EU reg 2020/740). This legislation will be applicable in the EU and Northern Ireland, but not in Great Britain. Great Britain will remain subject to GB REG 1222/2009.

How to know when you need new tyres?
Your tyres are the only part of the car in contact with the road surface so play an enormous part in the safe running of your vehicle. Although many drivers believe they know intuitively when their tyres need replacing, this is always a dangerous assumption to make. Your tyres could develop a problem at any time and checking them monthly is essential.
