How long should your car tyres last?

There are no hard and fast rules about how long a car tyre should last, with the lifespan of each tyre governed by a wide range of factors. Weather conditions, the temperature, road conditions and even your driving style can all influence the length of time a tyre remains in a good, usable condition.

 As a general rule of thumb, it would be reasonable to assume that a tyre should last for around ten years; however, most manufacturers recommend regular checks to ensure each tyre remains fit for purpose. For tyres over five years old, it is considered good practice to get them checked annually by an expert to ensure they are not compromising your vehicle’s safety. Bear in mind that your insurer will penalise you heavily for driving with worn or damaged tyres in the event of an accident; in fact, it could even invalidate your insurance completely. Incorrect storage of new tyres can cause the materials used in their manufacture to degrade; therefore, it is important to have complete confidence in your tyre provider. Stored under correct conditions, a brand-new tyre should be able to be stored for up to five years without compromising its integrity.
 

The number of miles you drive in a year, and whether you use summer and winter tyres, also has an impact on the life of your tyres. If you change your tyres with the seasons, you should consider replacing your summer tyres within four years and your winter tyres within seven years based on an annual mileage of around 27,000 miles; however, you should still undertake regular checks to make sure your tyres are not cracked, worn or damaged.

 All-season tyres have a longer lifespan than summer tyres due to the compounds used in their manufacture. These can be treated in a similar way to winter tyres, with a projected lifespan of around seven years.
 

You can help to prolong the lifespan of your tyres by taking into account a few factors. Always ensure that your tyre pressures are maintained at the optimum levels, as laid out in your vehicle handbook, as driving with under- or over-inflated tyres creates uneven wear and subjects the tyre to additional stresses that could compromise its integrity.

 Vehicles that are left parked for a long time without being driven require careful attention to the tyres. Although it would be easy to assume that a car that is not being driven is not causing wear to the tyres, this is not the case. Remaining static for a prolonged period of time puts excess pressure on some parts of the tyre and can create deformities that weaken the tyre, compromising the safety of your vehicle.
 
Check that all tyres have above the minimum allowable tread of 1.6mm, preferably changing them when the tread reaches a depth of 3mm for the best results.
