Batteries

The winter months put additional strain on batteries and ensuring they are in good working order and that they are charging correctly will ensure that those early morning or late night breakdowns become far rarer industry sources suggest that one of the principal reasons for breakdown call outs is a faulty battery.

As part of our normal safety checks we will also check the condition of your battery and confirm that the charging system is working correctly.

There are many variables that will effect the life of your battery from the temperature, how much use it gets, the efficiency of the charging system of your vehicle and the number of items that are pulling voltage from your battery. For example higher temperatures will reduce the life of your vehicle’s battery while colder temperatures will mean that the voltage is reduced and the car becomes harder to start- putting extra strain on your battery.

However as a rule of thumb a good quality battery will last between 4 and 5 years, while cheaper ones will last 2 to 3 years.

Ensuring that you check or have the car battery and the charging system checked will help to maximize the life of your battery, all our centres are equipped to check your batteries health. We will check the charging system, the charging rate and the voltage output, these checks will act as an indicator for your battery’s life expectancy.

Some batteries now come with a built in indicator which helps to establish if they are likely to be working effectively – these will normally be a clear round panel on the top of the battery. If the battery is in good working order this will show up green, if the battery is in danger of failing the indicator will go black. If you are unsure how to find this one of our technicians will be pleased to show you the indicator and

Of course if you do have a problem with your battery we hold suitable replacements in stock for immediate fitting for most vehicles. However a regular battery system check is recommended to avoid those last minute breakdowns.
